Chair’s Report to PVHG Annual General Meeting, 27th January 2026

The Group has held well-attended meetings around the year, with presentations on varied topics. These included Holy Rood Church’s Electoral Roll; the early years of Packington School; the history of the Kingdom of Mercia; and the bombing of Coventry in November 1940 (the signs of which had been clearly visible in the sky from Packington).

In June I led a guided walk up Mill Street which was well-attended despite the weather being not too promising. The walk ended with a refreshment break in the Memorial Hall where discussion reflected the interest which the walk had generated.

At the end of August we contributed to the Open Gardens event in the village. Sue Brown prepared an excellent display which was presented in Holy Rood Church and admired by many who visited the village that afternoon.

From September to December we put on a display at Ashby Museum showing photos and other items from the Packington Carnivals held between 1973 and 2008; other photos of Packington High Street through the last century; and a set of horseshoes discovered in fields on the outskirts of the village, which had been donated to the Group by one of the villagers.

One of the more trying issues during the year was that of changing the Group’s bank account in order to avoid significant bank charges. After some trial runs our new Treasurer, Robert Dilworth, managed to complete the process with NatWest and we hope this will prove satisfactory for the foreseeable future.

I would like to thank all group members for our lively and friendly discussions round the year. Particular thanks go to Sue Brown for her minute-taking and for bringing her thorough knowledge of all aspects of Packington history; to Robert Dilworth for taking on the unenviable task of treasurer, for maintaining and developing our website, and for representing us on the Memorial Hall Management Committee; and to Yvonne Eaton for the regular supply of refreshments.
